Wheelchair Football League
Ormeau is proud to be one of the four original foundation clubs of the Queensland Wheelchair Australian Football League (QWAFL). Wheelchair AFL is played on a basketball court, with five players per team on court at any one time. For us, a traditional handpass counts as a “kick”, preserving the spirit and skills of Australian Football in an inclusive, fast-paced format.
Since commencing in 2023, the Ormeau Wheelchair Bulldogs have grown both rapidly and sustainably. This growth has been matched by on-court success, including winning the minor premiership in 2024 and progressing to Grand Final runners-up in 2025.
In recent years, Ormeau has experienced the largest growth in Wheelchair AFL participation of any club in Queensland. Our program is built on genuine inclusivity. We welcome players with and without physical and/or mental impairments, and we are committed to creating an environment where everyone belongs and can contribute.
Ormeau is also the only club in Queensland capable of fielding a full women’s wheelchair team. This group regularly competes against mixed and men’s teams and were Grand Finalists in 2025. At the 2025 Toyota Wheelchair AFL Open (Nationals) in Melbourne, Ormeau athletes represented the club across all three competitions: Wheelchair AFL, AFL Inclusion, and the inaugural Women’s Victoria v The Allies match, a rare achievement nationally.
The Wheelchair Bulldogs are proud of their role in athlete development. The squad has already supported a player from the age of 14 through to selection in the Queensland training squad. The club actively recruits players across a wide range of ages and experience levels.
In 2025, Ormeau successfully secured grant funding to purchase two dedicated sports wheelchairs, ensuring that access to equipment is no longer a barrier to participation.
The team trains on Saturday afternoons at Ormeau Woods State High School and competes in matches on Sundays throughout the season.
We welcome players of all abilities and backgrounds to come and try wheelchair football, as well as those interested in contributing as support staff, including coaching, team management, or medical support.
If you are looking for an inclusive, competitive, and community-driven football environment, the Ormeau Wheelchair Bulldogs would love to hear from you.
